Acrylic or cement rendering – choose the best for your home
Among all the different types of renderings now available – cement and acrylic rendering are perhaps the two most popular. Homeowners often face this question – which one is the better for their property and it is difficult to answer this question in a single word or sentence. As a matter of fact which type of rendering is more suitable for your property should actually depend upon a number of factors like,
· The place of rendering
· Cost and affordability
· Timeframe and
· Durability
What is cement rendering?
It is the most popular type of rendering that uses a mix of concrete and sand along with lime or clay for the purpose. This is not available pre-mixed and can be applied on all different types of surfaces. Compared to other rendering types this is the cheapest and is naturally preferred by many property owners.
What is acrylic rendering?
Acrylic render mixes contain plastic and petroleum polymers and offers more flexibility than cement rendering. It saves the inner structure from hairline cracks generated over time and is of course more expensive than cement rendering. They are available pre-mixed and are normally applied as a thin layer over an initial base coat.
Let us consider the advantages and disadvantages associated with both the types of rendering.
Cost
When one has to choose between the two, costs is certainly a determining factor. Cement rendering is much cheaper than acrylic rendering. But in spite of having high upfront cost, acrylic rendering is known to offer better value for money as its life is considered to be much longer than that of cement rendering.
Durability
In this respect acrylic rendering performs much better than cement rendering. Cement rendering has a tendency of drying solid with time and turning brittle but acrylic remains lot more flexible for a longer duration of time and can also absorb small moments due to expansion and contraction.
Protection
Being plastic based acrylic rendering offer much better water resistance and also better protection against UV light exposure. As a matter of fact acrylic rendering is so good at protecting against the weather elements that they are found to last close to 20 yrs without fading, offering excellent protection to the inner structure.
Application
Unlike cement rendering, in which all the different elements are mixed at the site using water as activator, acrylic rendering comes pre-mixed and is naturally easier to use. There is also little chance of the mixing going wrong and you are more assured of getting the desired results.
Workmanship
Now this is a factor that you need to be careful about. The quality of rendering is heavily dependent upon the quality of workmanship of the renderers and as acrylic rendering is in the industry for around 10 years only, finding skilful renderers capable of doing a job to your complete satisfaction can sometimes is a problem.
If you consider all the above mentioned factors, it is not difficult to conclude that if the high upfront cost can be afforded, acrylic rendering is always a better choice – but the final choice is for the property owner to make.
